New alternative at anchor in the Ports of Toulon Bay

Thursday 30 July 2015

The Var Chamber of Commerce and Industry, who managed the Ports of Toulon Bay, imagined a challenging way to accomodate the 1st call at anchor of 2015: to turn the “Palais du Commerce et de la Mer”, a spacious conference room, into an ephemeral cruise terminal able to welcome the passengers and crew members of the Mein Schiff2 in the most effective way.

The challenge was fully completed. The first passengers, conveyed by maritimes shuttles and tenders, disembarked at the PCM around 8 am; in total, with 80 back and forth between the ship and the PCM, 1 300 cruise passengers (2/3 of the passengers) went ashore during the day.

In line with its strategy to focus on quality, The Var Chamber of Commerce and Industry meet the expectations of the tourists, setting up a Provencal market, a music player with French standards, and directional signs; even the local touristic train was here to welcome the passengers.Bilingual hostesses provided information about the attractive town of Toulon, and around ten buses waited the passengers who booked an excursion (to Aix-Marseille, Cassis, Sanary, Le Castellet…)

With 119 calls and 233 000 passengers expected for 2015 (+ 222% of the number of passengers since 2008), the Var Chamber of Commerce and Industry will have to use such ephemeral terminal more often in order to deal with the boom of Toulon as cruise destination and the coming of bigger ships.

The Mein Schiff 2 is expected to call at anchor in the Bay for the 2d time in september, and the PCM will be turned again into a cruise terminal to welcome its passengers.
